Anping, located in Tainan, Taiwan, is a place rich in history and culture — the entire town feels like an open-air museum. You simply can’t miss visiting its historical landmarks, such as Fort Zeelandia, the Anping Tree House, and the Eternal Golden Castle. Take a stroll along Anping Old Street, enjoy delicious local snacks, and soak in the laid-back charm of Tainan. It’s the perfect destination for a one-day trip.
Anping Old Street
Located near Fort Zeelandia, Anping Old Street (also known as Yanping Street) is one of the oldest streets in Taiwan, dating back over 300 years. This bustling alleyway is lined with traditional shops, food stalls, and local artisans, offering a vibrant mix of culture, flavor, and nostalgia.
🏠 Address: Anping Street, Anping District, Tainan City 708, Taiwan

As you stroll through the street, you’ll find classic Taiwanese snacks like shrimp rolls, coffin toast, and brown sugar jelly, alongside souvenir shops selling handmade trinkets, dried seafood, and retro toys.
Wet Plate Collodion Photography(英華攝影-濕版攝影)
Don’t miss the Wet Plate Collodion Photography experience at Julius Mannich & Co. — a nearly lost photographic art form. This antique technique, which dates back to the 19th century, is now practiced by only a handful of skilled photographers in Taiwan.
🏠 Address: 台南市安平區安北路233巷3號01室(📍Google Map)
⏰ Opening Hours: 11:30–19:30 closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
🌐 Official Website: https://www.instagram.com/dx.xunwuplan/
Inside the gallery, you’ll also find an exhibition that tells the story of Julius Mannich, with a historical timeline linking the origins of photography, the evolution of Anping Harbor, and the background of wet plate photography. It’s a fascinating journey through time, well worth exploring slowly.
Each bellows camera used here is over a hundred years old, carefully sourced by the photography team from around the world and lovingly restored by the master photographer.
Once the shutter is pressed, the exposure takes less than a second — a moment so brief that you’ll need to plan your expression in advance! It also requires incredible precision and skill from the photographer.
There are vintage costumes and traditional qipaos available for guests to wear during the shoot, making the entire experience even more engaging and fun.
The final image developed through wet plate photography has a distinct tone and nostalgic charm that digital cameras simply can’t replicate. Every portrait carries the warmth of craftsmanship and a unique story frozen in time.

Julius Mannich & CO. has a history of over a hundred years. It was originally built by a local merchant and is one of the five major Western trading houses (known as the “Five Foreign Merchant Houses”) in Anping. In its early days, it functioned as a commercial firm engaged in import trade. During that period, Tainan was one of Taiwan’s key commercial and political centers, making Tongxing Merchant House an important trading hub in the region.
Over time, the building was repurposed for various official uses, including serving as the Anping Branch of Tainan Prefecture Office and later as a residence for the Taiwan Salt Company.
The architecture blends elements of Western colonial style with traditional Taiwanese design. Its iconic red brick exterior and arched windows showcase a distinct Western influence, reflecting a harmonious fusion of Eastern and Western cultures.
Fort Zeelandia
Fort Zeelandia, built by the Dutch in 1624, is the earliest Western-style fortress in Taiwan. Its iconic red brick walls and white watchtower stand as symbols of the island’s colonial history, from Dutch rule to its recovery by Koxinga. The site preserves sections of the original fortress walls and houses a museum showcasing historical artifacts.
🏠 Address: No. 82, Guosheng Road, Anping District, Tainan City, Taiwan
⏰ Opening Hours: 8:30 AM – 5:10 PM
Visitors can climb the watchtower for a panoramic view of Anping and its harbor. Don’t miss the ancient cannons and Dutch bricks on the ground — each one a tangible trace of Taiwan’s rich past.
Anping Tree House
The Anping Tree House is one of my favorite places to visit in Anping.
🏠 Address: No. 104, Gubao Street, Anping District, Tainan City, Taiwan
⏰ Opening Hours: 8:30 AM – 5:10 PM
The old warehouse is completely wrapped in the roots of giant banyan trees, creating a unique blend of nature and history that feels almost like a fairytale. You can walk along the elevated paths to see the entire tree house from above.
It’s super photogenic and a great spot to snap some memorable shots!
Former Tait & Co. Merchant House
Located right next to Anping Old Fort, Tait & Co. Merchant House is a Western-style building dating back to 1867. With its red brick archways, white colonnades, and open layout influenced by Southeast Asian architecture, the place has a charming colonial vibe. The mix of lush greenery and towering old trees in the courtyard makes it feel like you’ve stepped into a time capsule from the 19th century.
🏠 Address: No. 108, Gubao Street, Anping District, Tainan City, Taiwan
⏰ Opening Hours: 8:30 AM – 5:30 PM
Inside, the space has been transformed into a small museum. You’ll find historical artifacts and displays that offer a glimpse into Taiwan’s past, especially Anping’s role in early international trade. It’s a quiet and beautiful spot to slow down, soak in some history, and snap a few dreamy photos while you’re at it.
Eternal Golden Castle
Eternal Golden Castle is the first modern-style fort in Taiwan, built to protect the island from foreign attacks. The fort is square-shaped, with a moat around it, and has several old cannons and red brick walls. It’s full of history and a great place to take a walk and snap some photos.

Yuguang Island
Yuguang Island is a small island just one bridge away from Tainan’s city center. It was once a quiet fishing village, known for its simple coastal charm and rich cultural history. During the Japanese colonial era, it was used for military purposes, but today it has become a hidden gem.
The island features a sandy beach, windbreak forest trails, and sunset viewing spots — perfect for walking, biking, and taking photos.
The best time to visit is in the late afternoon, when you can relax on the beach and watch the romantic sunset over the sea.

Riverbank café
This lovely café is set inside a 100-year-old historic building. It brings together old architecture, books, and drinks in one peaceful place. The big banyan tree outside makes it extra pretty and relaxing. The building used to be the Anping Customs House by the Tainan Canal, and you can still see the old office rooms, tatami mats, vintage photos, and other historical items inside.

Although it’s called a café, they only serve tea at the moment, no coffee, food, or desserts. But the prices are very affordable, and it’s a great quiet spot if you want to avoid the crowds and enjoy some history.
